Rich and Skinny cargo legging

Hot Weather, Hot Item
We had to know—what’s the ONE item local ladies are all clamoring for this summer? We checked in with two local shops to find out.

“Anything with cargo pockets is what’s hot right now, and into fall! We have a fabulous Celine military-inspired jacket that looks like it’s straight off the runway, cargo jeans and pants—some skinny and short, others messy and easy—from J Brand, Current Elliot, and Rich and Skinny. We even have cargo leggings!”
— Robin Mizrahi-Sartini, co-owner, Pamela Robbins, Harwood Court, Scarsdale. 472-4033 or 472-9033.

“Embellished leather belts from French designer Ronald Pineau—we simply can’t keep them in the store! They sold out for fall and we brought them back for summer, with accents like Swarovski crystals and hardware like studs and stones. They look gorgeous over a cotton summery tshirt dress or a linen shirt dress. They really liven up any outfit!”
Lori Land, co-owner, Churchills of Mount Kisco, 41 South Moger Ave., Mt. Kisco. 666-4800.

The Cut You’ll Want Next
Mika Rummo, Senior Stylist of Manhattan’s Salon AKS, who now makes housecalls in Westchester (917-693-8071, hairbymika@me.com), chose these three different length celebrity cuts that are on-trend for fall.

Long Hair
Penelope Cruz
Penelope has what I like to call a “convertible bang.” Her bangs are short enough to be worn as a full, heavy bang but they’re long enough to push to the side and blend in with the rest of her layers. This gives the illusion of fullness for fine hair and allows for more movement on thick hair. Also, it is ideal for those with a shorter forehead where traditional bangs don’t normally work. It’s particularly flattering for rounder faces because the shorter angles and all the resulting movement help give the face definition and shape. You get the illusion of an elongated face. As another bonus, this is a great option for any woman over 40 who thinks she has to cut her hair short to be age-appropriate. The sophisticated cut has an instant “facelift” effect so you can keep your long hair while getting the youthful swing and flattering look of a shorter cut.

Medium Length
Ginnifer Goodwin
Ginnifer is the perfect example of a classic bob converted to a modern and edgy look. The length is perfect for Ginnifer’s heart-shaped face. The longer layers keep the hair closer to the head at the forehead and cheek area where her face is the widest, creating a narrowing effect. Her hair is more layered at the bottom to make it look fuller, giving her width at her chin, where her face is narrowest. Styling this cut is key. If it had rounded the ends, this cut would age you by 20 years and make you look like a soccer mom. However, if you keep a more natural texture or flip the ends out ever so slightly, you will get an edgy, modern feel.

Short Hair
Sienna Miller
Short hair should look fresh and youthful, just as it does here on Sienna Miller. This is an ideal cut for those who are not afraid of change and have high cheekbones as a facial attribute. The longer layers and piece-iness in the front defines those beautiful cheekbones while keeping a soft and delicate feel. The shorter and tighter layers in the back help to create a dramatic effect and keep the look from becoming rounded (which is what gives less successful short haircuts a dowdy appearance). The slighter longer edges at the nape of the neck help to balance out a narrow chin and/or a low hairline. On an older woman, this short, edgy cut allows for that “facelift” effect and the longer edges at the nape of the neck help rejuvenate an aging jawline.

Beauty Buzz

Botanical Babes…
As a beauty junky, I am usually willing to try anything and everything when it comes to products. But now that I’m a new mom, I find myself reading the labels on bottles more often (especially when it comes to what I’ll put on the baby). That’s why I think this new line of all-organic baby washes is a great find. Founded by a NYC mom, all Babo Botanicals products are free of parabens, sulfates, common allergens, and other “yucky” stuff you might find in other products. Visit www.babobotanicals.com for a list of stores in our area.

I also recently received a package from South Salem-based organics company Lidaremé, and fell in love with the all-natural bath and personal care products (The Balm, an all-purpose, dry-skin salve, is a must-try). After starting her first line of products, The Botanical Baby, the company’s founder, Indie Lee was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

After the mass was successfully removed, Lee was more committed than ever to chemical-free products as a way of reducing one’s exposure to environmental toxins. Learn more about her products by visiting www.thebotanicalcollection.net.

Must-get Pro Products
Some of you may recall Gisele Bundchen’s famous line in the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada: “We were in the beauty department and she held up this Shu Uemura eyelash curler and said ‘What is this?’” Now, the fabulous Japanese-based line is available here in our area at the Prada Studio salon in Pelham. (Our own Elsa Brenner is a fan). Visit www.pradastudio.com for info.

Hair Repair Iron
It sounds like an oxymoron—an iron that actually repairs the hair? But the K-Pak Vapor Flat Iron from Joico, available at Hair and Beyond in Rye, does just that, by delivering keratin (a protein that strengthens hair) to strands with every use. 20 Purdy Ave., 967-0860.

1. Ginseng: La Prairie Anti-aging Stress Cream
2. Vitamin C: La Roche-Posay Active-C Facial Moisturizer
3. Carrot Oil: Decleor Aromessence Ylang Ylang Purifying Concentrate

Beauty Boost
Sometimes, what boosts your body can also benefit your skin! Supplements like ginseng and vitamin C are showing up in a bevy of skin care products. Here are some with good-enough-to-eat ingredients that are sure to make skin glow this summer.

Vitamin C: La Roche-Posay Active-C Facial Moisturizer is packed with the powerful antioxidant that, when used on skin, is said to help decrease wrinkles by up to 50 percent and smooth an uneven complexion. $45.50, drugstores.

Ginseng: La Prairie Anti-aging Stress Cream contains a cocktail of horsetail, mushroom, and ginseng extracts, to name a few, but the “odd” ingredients really do help skin (I know, I tried it!) to improve its overall appearance and texture over time. $195, Saks Fifth Avenue, Greenwich. (203) 862-5300.

Carrot Oil: Elle Macpherson, Charlize Theron, and Padma Lakshmi swear by the blend of essential oils (carrot, chamomile, rosemary) and extracts of mango and melon in aromatherapy skin care line Decleor. Now, the celeb fave has a purifying concentrate that helps to balance the skin’s own natural oils (perfect for summer breakouts, when our skin’s sweat glands are working overtime). Decleor Aromessence Ylang Ylang Purifying Concentrate, $68, Nordstrom, The Westchester, White Plains, 946-1122.

Posh Tots
Long before Suri Cruise and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt donned droolworthy duds, tots here in our area were dressing to the nines in designs from French line Jacadi. Now, Jacadi, which has locations in Greenwich and Westport, has joined forces with Britain-based design house Liberty for a collection featuring dresses, rompers, blouses, bloomers and more, all with charming Liberty prints, from bold florals in reds and pinks to a delicate light blue design on smocked dresses and frilled hats. You can find the collection at 22 Greenwich Ave. in Greenwich, and in Westport at 24 Taylor Place.
